Description

Acer shirasawanum Johin has reddish colored leaves with visible yellow-green veins in the spring. If Johin receives sufficient sunlight in the summer the leaves keep their red tones. Fall color is orange to crimson. Johin in Japanese means ‘elegant’ and it is an elegant addition to any landscape.  Shirasawanum maples can be identified by looking at the flowers and subsequent seed pods [samaras].  If  the samaras point up rather than hang down it is a shirasawanum – palmatum species hang down.

Acer shirasawanum Johin prefers mostly sun to partial shade in well-drained soil. As with all maples, other than those with green leaves, sunshine is necessary to bring out the leaf color. A minimum of 4-5 hours of sunlight is necessary to keep your maple red, gold, purple or white. If the leaves start to show less color and more green then you don’t have enough sunlight.  For more information please see Care and Maintenance of Japanese Maples. This maple is estimated to reach 6′ tall x 4′ wide in 10 years. Once established it is hardy to -20 degrees USDA zone 5.

If you love Japanese Maples as much as I do, you can learn more about them by joining the Facebook  Group – Japanese Maples and Conifers. It is free to join – you just have to be a Facebook member and the contributors to the group have a wealth of experience and lots of photos. No question is dumb – you will not be criticized for lack of knowledge, rather you will get a variety of opinions from all over the country. This is what I value the most – learning about variations of growth, leaf size and color in different sections of the USA and around the world. I often participate in the discussions.

Limited availability – Additional 1 gallon size maples available April/May 2020 – sold out.
