Description

Acer palmatum Marlo is a bushy little dwarf  with tiny dark green leaves edged in hot-pink.  Fall color is scarlet red. Slow growing, this maple may reach 4′ tall and 3′ wide in 10 years. Marlo is a new cultivar for my nursery and a recent import from Holland. Small maples such as Beni hime, Hupp’s Dwarf, Geisha, and Marlo do not have large root balls so good drainage is very important. Over watering or planting in too large a container can prove deadly. When the roots cannot dry out root rot follows. This weakens the maple and allows disease to grow including Pseudomonas and Verticillin Wilt.

Acer palmatum Marlo is best grown in a container where she can be protected and placed in the best location for enjoyment. Morning sun to about noon is best with shade in the hottest part of the afternoon. Once established she is hardy to -10 degrees, USDA zone 6. For information on the proper way to care for your maples, please see Care and Maintenance of Japanese Maples.

If you love Japanese Maples as much as I do, you can learn more about them by joining the Facebook  Group – Japanese Maples and Conifers. It is free to join – you just have to be a Facebook member and the contributors to the group have a wealth of experience and lots of photos. No question is dumb – you will not be criticized for lack of knowledge, rather you will get a variety of opinions from all over the country. This is what I value the most – learning about variations of growth, leaf size and color in different sections of the USA and around the world. I often participate in the discussions.

Limited availability – New for this year – 1 gallon and perhaps 2 gallon sizes will be available April/May 2020.
