Acer palmatum Fireglow is a wonderful red leaf maple with a medium size palmatum leaf and a lovely structure. The spring leaves are bright pink-red and remain red in color through the summer more so than many other similar cultivars which darken to a burgundy color. Fall color is fantastic scarlet red. The Fireglow maple in my display garden has an abundance of flowers each spring that produce a multitude of seeds – called ‘samaras’ on Japanese Maples. This feature adds to the overall look of this beautiful maple.
Fireglow is a long-time favorite for sunny locations because it is a slow to moderate growing maple with good color and it doesn’t get too big for a small garden. Estimated height is 9-10′ in 10 years. Once established, Acer palmatum Fireglow is hardy to -20 degrees – USDA Zone 5.
Fireglow is truly a special red palmatum maple and very easy to grow. Just follow my Planting Instructions. As with most Japanese Maples some pruning during the first few years will help you reach the shape you want. For more see Pruning Japanese Maples. For those of you who have discovered the wonderful world of Japanese Maples please buy yourself the 4th edition of Japanese Maples, by J.D. Vertrees and Peter Gregory.
