Acer japonicum ‘Aconitifolium’ is a very special Japanese Maple due to its incredible fall color display. It is known as the ‘Dancing Peacock’ maple. This is a name well deserved because of the awesome variations of color in the fall leaves. Aconitifolium is a green leaf maple that is simply outstanding in autumn – not just the colors which range from yellow to orange to crimson and then purple, but the leaves themselves which are multi-layered and shaped like the rounded top of a peacock feather.
Also known as the fern maple it can grow to 15′ tall and wide’. A mature specimen is next to the Tea House at the famous Portland Japanese Garden. Which is widely acclaimed as the most authentic Japanese Garden outside of Japan. Pruning Japanese Maples is an important part of their care so I recommend Pruning Japanese Maples and Care and Maintenance of Japanese Maples.
Acer japonicum Aconitifolium is a moderate growing maple, but as it ages the branches become very stiff and we are unable to ship larger specimens. Therefore, the 3 gallon size will be limited. However, a few 2 and 3 gallon Aconitifolium are now available. Once established this maple is hardy to -20 degrees – USDA zone 5.
The first photo is the Aconitifolium in my display garden in the fall. The next is a close-up of the leaves in October.
