   Acer shirasawanum 'Aureum'

The photo on the left is the Aureum in our display garden and on the right is the same maple showing fall color. The third photo is a one gallon Aureum for sale.

The common name for this cultivar is 'Golden Full Moon Maple' an older cultivar in the same genus as the Autumn Moon Maple [Acer shirasawanum 'Autumn Moon']

A small to medium sized tree with wonderful color throughout the growing season. The new growth is an exquisite lime green. Summer color is a golden lime green with a tinge of red along the edges of each leaf. The Golden Full Moon Maple is a spectacular tree though slow growing.

Recommended sun exposure is in the morning with some shade protection in the hot afternoon sun. Fall colors are some of the best for any Japanese Maple ranging from gold to orange to crimson often on each individual leaf. This cultivar is highly desired for a smaller partial shade garden. Placement in either a Northern or Eastern location would be best. Aureum is an extremely slow grower which may reach 6' in 15 years.  Once established hardy to USDA Zone 5.

      Acer shirasawanum 'Autumn Moon'

This  photo shows the fantastic summer color of Autumn Moon as grown in our display garden. Another of my [Sam] favorites.

Selected by J. D. Vertrees in the 1970s this lovely cultivar is in the same genus as the Golden Full Moon Maple [Acer shirasawanum Aureum]. A small to medium sized tree with wonderful color throughout the growing season. The new growth ranges in color from yellow to dark orange. Summer color tones similarly are shades of yellow/ green, gold, salmon and orange.

Recommended sun exposure is in the morning with some shade protection in the hot afternoon sun. Fall colors mirror the spring and summer look with all the leaves darker in color from gold to red. Not a fast growing maple, but definitely faster than its cousin 'Aureum'.

Estimated height in 10 years is 7'. Once established hardy to USDA zone 5. A must for a Japanese Maple collector.

    Acer shirasawanum 'Red Dawn'

The photo shows the beginning of fantastic fall color for Red Dawn the second photo shows Red Dawn in a 3 gallon container April 2014.  In the fall the leaves will evolve to a deeper crimson -scarlet red. A great pick for summer and fall color.

Red Dawn is a new shirasawanum cultivar from Talon Buchholz in Gaston, Oregon. This is a red leaf shirasawanum cultivar, which is rare because most of the full moon maples are lighter colors of green and gold. In April the dark red leaves provide quite a contrast and in fall color is the reason for the name - it is an electric crimson red.

Red Dawn has a lovely shape and growth habit not too big and more like a tree than a bush. Height in 10 years 9' with a 4' spread.  This cultivar can handle full sun to partial shade, but mostly sun is recommended. It is a perfect maple for a small sunny garden as the centerpiece. Once established hardy to USDA zone 5.

Acer shirasawanum 'Jordan'

The photos are courtesy of Talon Buchholz. The first one shows the spring color turning towards summer with the red tint around the edges. The third photo shows the transitioning to fall color.

Jordan is a relatively new maple that provides an alternative to the 'Golden Full Moon Maple' - Aureum. Jordan is faster growing than Aureum and can handle more sun without burning as Aureum would.

A medium sized tree with wonderful color throughout the growing season. The new growth is a little more of a lemon color than Aureum. Summer color is a golden lemon lime green. Fall colors are exquisite from yellow to gold, orange and red.

This cultivar is highly desired because of the rapid growth and yellow green new growth. Jordan may reach  9-10'' tall and 5' wide in 8 years. Once established hardy to USDA Zone 6.

 Acer shirasawanum 'Kawaii'

The first photo is courtesy of Talon Buchholz showing  fall color. The second photo is the Kawaii in our display garden during summer. The third photo shows a one gallon Kawaii for sale - photo taken in fall with the beginning of the fall change in color.

Kawaii is a slow growing lace leaf cultivar that can reach 4'  in 10 years. New growth is pink/red turning to a darker red color with green in the summer months. Words cannot describe the unusual beauty of this rare cultivar, but in Japanese the name means 'cute' and that is absolutely correct.

Growth habit is compact for a lace leaf and it is often grafted on a high standard to give it some height which creates a whole new appearance. However, a low graft is perfect for the bonsai enthusiast, as well a more traditional look for this cultivar.  Wonderful addition to a small garden or for a container on a deck or patio.  Once established hardy to USDA zone 5.  Fall color is orange to crimson. Truly a collector's must.

Acer shirasawanum 'Yasemin'

Photos courtesy of Talon BuchholzThe first photo shows fall color and the second photo shows summer color.

Yasemin is another new cultivar introduced by Talon Buchholz - Buchholz and Buchholz Nursery in Gaston, Oregon.  As with all shirasawanum 'full moon maples' the bark is unusual and seed pods [samaras] point upward and not down as with palmatum cultivars.  This special cultivar has a deeply dissected and shiny leaf which is unusual for a shirasawanum maple and gives it an air of elegance. The beautiful dark burgundy leaves fade somewhat in the summer, but do not disappoint the bright scarlet red in the fall.  The dark purple-black bark provides for winter interest.

Yasemin grows moderately to a height of 12' in 10 years with an estimated mature height of 15'. It has lovely shape and requires little pruning to keep it looking its best. Yasemin grows more like a tree than a shrub with an estimated eight in 10 years of 10' and a 8' spreading canopy.  This cultivar can handle full sun to partial shade, but mostly sun is recommended. It is a perfect maple for a small sunny garden as the centerpiece. Once established hardy to USDA zone 5.
